Want to use your HSA/FSA at Crunch?
If you exercise to prevent or manage a medical condition, you can use your HSA/FSA at Crunch!
Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) are dedicated accounts used only for qualified medical expenses.
Because exercise supports general wellness, fitness costs don’t immediately qualify. But if you exercise to manage a medical condition—and a provider documents the connection—you can unlock those funds for fitness fees! This means you could save up to 40% on your Crunch membership or training fees!
But first, you need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from a licensed healthcare provider confirming that exercise is necessary for your medical condition.
Today, we’ll walk you through how to get the Letter of Medical Necessity you need through a convenient $15 online consultation with Dr. B—our trusted telehealth partner!
But first, how do HSAs and FSAs help you save money?
HSAs and FSAs are tax-advantaged accounts designed to help you save on medical expenses like doctor copays, medications, and first-aid supplies.
You don’t pay income tax on the money you deposit into or withdraw from these accounts. So when you use them, you get a little extra help paying for your healthcare costs.
Picture it like this:
- You earn $100.
- Based on your tax bracket, you pay about 20% in taxes.
- With a regular bank account, you pay $20 in income taxes and have $80 left to deposit or spend.
- With an HSA or FSA account, you don’t pay the $20 in taxes, so you can deposit the full $100—giving you an extra $20 to spend on medical care and services!
If you don’t have an HSA or FSA, check out this helpful Dr. B article to learn more about eligibility and how to get started.
When you can use your FSA or HSA for gym memberships
Many items and services can be used for medical reasons and for general health. For example, a massage may be part of a self-care routine for one person but may treat the chronic back pain of another. Only the latter person can pay for a massage with HSA/FS funds.
When it comes to fitness, regular exercise boosts mood, supports sleep, and encourages overall wellness—but it can also help treat or prevent many conditions. So if you have a medical condition or are trying to prevent developing one due to your family history, a doctor may prescribe exercise as a treatment!
Qualifying medical conditions include (but are not limited to):
- Arthritis
- Autoimmune disease
- Back pain
- Cancers
- Chronic fatigue
- Erectile dysfunction
- Fibromyalgia
- Gout
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Mental health conditions like anxiety and depression
- Migraines
- Obesity + heavy weight
- Polycystic ovary syndrome
- Pre-diabetes
- Respiratory diseases like asthma
- Sleep disorders
How to use your HSA/FSA at Crunch
If you think exercise can help you manage or prevent your condition, you’ll need a medical provider to document your fitness costs in a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). Once you have your letter, you can submit it with any (new) Crunch receipts to your HSA/FSA administrator to get reimbursed for the receipt amount using your tax-free funds!
You’ll most likely get your entire Crunch costs reimbursed. To calculate how much you’ll save on Crunch with your HSA/FSA, you need to know your federal income tax bracket. Once you have that, you can calculate the savings based on what you would have otherwise paid in income taxes—anywhere from 10% to almost 40% of that amount!
